The hiker rescued from Tunnel Trail and transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Saturday has passed away, according to authorities.
The young man has been identified as San Marcos High School student Jake Parks, 17.
Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Raquel Zick said the Coroner’s Bureau is investigating his death, which does not appear to be suspicious.
The initial trail rescue call was for heat-related illness, according to the County Fire Department.
The Santa Barbara Unified School District set up compassion centers at San Marcos High School and Santa Barbara High School this week with counselors for students to talk to, district spokesman Nick Masuda said.
Each school informed students about the counseling services available, he added.
The Sheriff’s Office said Parks was 18. Family members told Noozhawk he was 17, and this story has been updated.
