Hot dogs, ice cream, and high temperatures are all on the menu this Fourth of July weekend as weather starts heating up across Santa Barbara County.

While Santa Barbara will see some warmer weather this weekend, the hottest areas will be inland and the foothills, including the Santa Ynez Valley.

“We have a very long duration heatwave mainly for the interior parts of the valley. Those areas are under heat warnings that start tomorrow and go to Sunday,” said David Gomberg, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service.

Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley will have an excessive heat watch in effect from Wednesday morning through Sunday night with temperatures of 95-105 degrees possible, according to the NWS.

Heading into the weekend, Gomberg said that residents should be aware of the heat warnings and the elevated risk of fires.

The Santa Barbara County Fire Department is monitoring the weather and adjusting its staffing depending on how severe it gets.

Capt. Scott Safechuck reminds residents that fireworks are illegal in most county areas.

“We encourage people to go to legal firework shows,” he said.

Safechuck also reminded people to be careful when barbecuing, especially when cooking with charcoal or anything that might may have sparks or embers fly into nearby brush or vegetation.

He also recommended having a water source or fire extinguisher for any fire.

“The reasonability of putting out any fire is on a sober adult,” Safechuck said.
