Host Santa Barbara won the seventh place match Saturday in the Santa Barbara Invitational, beating Division 1 powerhouse Loyola 12-9.
Huntington Beach won the prestigious invitational, beating Laguna Beach 16-9 and then edging Mater Dei in the final, 10-8.
San Marcos lost two games Saturday, 14-11 to Monte Vista and 12-3 to Mira Costa, to fiish in 12th place. Dos Pueblos also lost twice Saturday, 11-5 to Garces and 14-8 to San Clemente, and did not finish in the top 16.
In the seventh place game, the Dons jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter lead behind three goals by Jack Taylor and two by Griffin Pierettis and managed to fend off a 3-1 rally by Loyola in the final three minutes.
Taylor and Pieretti finished with four goals each and Ryan Drake had three goals and three assists. Sean O’Brien had three field blocks and three ejections drawn. Wyatt Pieretti had 11 saves.
Earlier Saturday, Santa Barbara lost to San Ramon Valley, the eventual sixth-place finisher, by a score of 12-9.
Drake had six goals and earned four ejections. O’Brien had three goals and earned seven exclusions.
