Artists took to the pavement this weekend for the 37th annual I Madonnari Street Painting Festival at the Santa Barbara Mission.

I Madonnari is a fundraiser for the Children’s Creative Project, a program of the Santa Barbara County Education Office, and features food vendors and live music along with the spectacle of artists creating temporary chalk masterpieces in real time.

Festival hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Monday at the mission, at 2201 Laguna St.

The completed artwork can be seen for days or even weeks afterward, depending on the weather.

I Madonnari was originally inspired by the International Street Painting Competition in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy.

Santa Barbara’s annual festival includes more than 100 street paintings drawn with chalk pastels.

This year’s featured artist, renowned Santa Clarita “Madonnara” Lorelle Miller, is creating a “larger-than-life mural” at the base of the mission’s front steps, organizers said.

Her portfolio of street paintings includes many works at previous Santa Barbara I Madonnari events.
