An inmate at the Santa Barbara County Main Jail died Sunday in an apparent suicide, according to the Sheriff’s Department.
Shortly after 8 a.m., the inmate — identified as 61-year-old Scott Powers of Santa Barbara — jumped from the second floor of a housing unit at the jail intake and release center near Santa Barbara, Lt. Jarrett Morris said.
He said custody staff entered the housing unit, along with Wellpath medical staff, and immediately began CPR and applied an automated external defibrillator.
American Medical Response paramedics continued life-saving efforts, and transported Powers to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where he died of his injuries.
“Although this appears to be an apparent suicide, the Sheriff’s Office is conducting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this incident,” Morris said.
The sheriff’s Coroner’s Bureau will conduct further investigation to determine the cause and manner of Powers’ death, he added.
Powers was arrested by sheriff’s deputies in Goleta on Dec. 28 for two misdemeanor warrants — for disobeying a court order related to property cand narcotic crimes, Morris told Noozhawk.
He was in custody in lieu of $20,000 bail for each warrant.
