An investigation was underway Monday night after a female inmate died at the North County Jail, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.
Shortly after 5:30 p.m., a custody deputy was conducting checks and found the woman down in her cell, said Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer.
Three inmates were housed in the four-person cell, Zick said. One was present at the time of the incident, while the third was being escorted back to the cell by staff from another part of the jail.
Custody deputies and jail medical personnel immediately started lifesaving measures, Zick said, and county firefighters and AMR paramedics took over, but the woman was declared dead at the scene.
Her name was not released pending notification of relatives.
The woman had been taken into custody last Wednesday on an outstanding no-bail felony arrest warrant related to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm and ammunition, Zick said.
She appeared in court on Friday, and she was remanded to custody without bail for an additional felony charge of cruelty to animals.
”Detectives from the Sheriff’s Office are conducting multiple investigations into the in-custody death, including a coroner investigation,” Zick said. “Additional information will be released once family members have been notified of the death, and upon the conclusion of the investigation.”
