Detectives are continuing to investigate a shooting last week in the city’s Westside neighborhood that left a 16-year-old boy seriously injured, according to the Santa Barbara Police Department.
The shooting, which police did not report until Monday, occurred at about 8 p.m. last Wednesday on the 1200 block of San Andres Street, near Bohnett Park, Sgt. Ethan Ragsdale said.
Officers were called to the emergency room at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital, where the victim had been taken, Ragsdale said.
“It was reported the victim and another juvenile were walking on the sidewalk when a vehicle stopped, and the occupants contacted the two juveniles,” Ragsdale said. “A verbal altercation occurred and one of the vehicle’s occupants fired a small-caliber firearm, striking the victim in the abdomen.”
No one has been arrested in the case, Ragsdale said, adding that the shooting “is believed to be an isolated incident.”
The victim, whose name was not released because of his age, remained hospitalized, but details on his condition were not available.
The Police Department is seeking any information from the community related to this incident. Anonymous reports can be made by calling 805.897.2355.
It is not known whether the shooting was gang-related, according to Ragsdale.
