It’s a big Saturday for boys volleyball in the community as Dos Pueblos and Bishop Diego host separate tournaments that will draw a combined total of 40 teams.
The 47th annual Dos Pueblos Invitational will bring 28 teams into UCSB’s Thunderdome for a full day of action that starts at 8 a.m.
San Marcos is the defending champion. The Royals are joined by the host Chargers, Rio Americano of Sacramento, Newbury Park, Harvard Westlake, St. Francis of La Cañada and Oak Park as No. 1 teams in pool play.
San Marcos is ranked 13th in the latest CIF-SS Division 1-2 poll, St. Francis is 17th and Dos Pueblos 19th. Newbury Park is ranked fourth in Division 4. Rio Americano is 12th in the CIF North Region poll. Tourney participant Jesuit of Sacramento is rated No. 2 in the north.
The other entries are Simi Valley, Saugus, Village Christian, Westlake, San Luis Obispo, Granada Hills Charter; Newbury Park, Windward, Venice, Santa Monica, Paraclete, Valencia, Palisades, St. Joseph, Capo Valley Christian, Hart, El Camino Real, Camarillo, Eagle Rock, Calabasas and Quartz Hill.
Cardinal Classic
Bishop Diego coach Dillan Bennett has assembled a 12-team tournament for the fifth annual event at the Bishop campus.
Rio Mesa, Laguna Blanca and San Juan Hills head the three four-team pools. San Juan Hills is top-ranked in CIF-SS Division 4 and Rio Mesa of the Channel League is No. 1 in Division 5.
Bishop Diego is placed in a pool with Rio Mesa, Cabrillo and Oaks Christian. Santa Ynez and Pioneer Valley are entered and will play in the pool with San Juan Hills and Channel League school Oxnard. Laguna Blanca is grouped with Pacifica Christian of Santa Monica, Arroyo Grande and Hueneme.
Pool play starts at 8:30 a.m. The top two teams in each pool advance to the championship division playoffs and the bottom two play in the consolation division.
Bishop Diego is using the tournament as a program fundraiser. There will be an admission charge of $8 for adults and $5 for children.
