Southbound Highway 101 was shut down in the Carpinteria area on Monday afternoon after a big-rig jack-knifed, blocking the freeway lanes, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash, possibly caused by a reckless driver in another vehicle, occurred at about 1:30 p.m. near Santa Claus Lane, according to the CHP.

Southbound traffic was being diverted off the highway to Via Real, causing major congestion, with traffic reportedly backed up to Montecito.

A black Dodge Charger may have caused the crash, according to the CHP.

It is unknown is there were any injuries in the crash.

A Sigalert was issued at about 2:15 p.m., according to Caltrans spokesman Jim Shivers.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m., the CHP announced that both freeway lanes had reopened.

Additional details were not immediately available.
