Jazz at the Lobero will present Charles Lloyd Quartet featuring Bill Frisell, Larry Grenadier and Kweku Sumbry, 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 12.

“This remarkable ensemble promises an evening of expansive, deeply expressive jazz, where masterful artistry meets youthful energy and spontaneous musical discovery,” organizers said.

Lloyd and jazz guitar giant Frisell first joined forces in 2013 for a project in Montreal.

“Their connection was immediate and the joy of making music together has endured,” organizers said. “Over the years that followed, Bill has toured and recorded with Charles in various formations; duo, trio, quartet and quintet.

Their award-winning recordings together include ‘I Long to See You,’ ‘Tone Poem,” and “Chapel Trio on Blue Note Records.”

For his 21st return to the Lobero, Charles has assembled a dream quartet; along with Bill are renowned bassist, Larry Grenadier and the rising young star on drums, Kweku Sumbry.

A towering figure in modern jazz, Lloyd’s accolades span generations. First named DownBeat magazine’s Artist of the Year in 1967, he received the distinction again in 2023.

In 2024, Lloyd achieved the DownBeat Critics Poll quadruple crown, earning Hall of Fame, Artist of the Year, Album of the Year, and Tenor Saxophonist of the Year honors — a feat previously accomplished only by John Coltrane.

“An NEA jazz master, Memphis Music Hall of Fame inductee, and recipient of France’s Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, Lloyd continues to create music of profound spiritual depth and transcendent beauty,” concert organizers said.

His Blue Note album “The Sky Will Still Be There Tomorrow” won the Netherlands’ Edison Award for Best International Jazz Recording of 2024, further cementing his place among the most influential artists of his generation.

“Rooted in the gospel and blues traditions of his native Memphis, Lloyd’s singular sound has captivated audiences far beyond the jazz world, inspiring musicians from the Beach Boys and Grateful Dead to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin,” event organizers said.

Lloyd’s 2025 double album “Figure In Blue,” featuring pianist Jason Moran and guitarist Marvin Sewell, journeys through soulful ballads, raw Delta blues, and heartfelt tributes to Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, and longtime collaborator Zakir Hussain.

His 2026 release “Sangam & Friends” further celebrates his profound musical connection with the late tabla master.

“With a career defined by fearless exploration, extraordinary collaborations, and an enduring spirit of discovery, Lloyd remains, in Carlos Santana’s words, “an international music treasure,” according to Jazz at the Lobero.
