Jeff Bloch was recognized as the Special Olympics Athlete of the Month at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table press luncheon on Monday.
Bloch, 58, is a longtime Special Olympics athlete, starting in track in the late 1980s. He won a medal in his first competition.
He’s also competed in basketball, swimming and bowling.
“He has been participating in our bowling program since it began and has always been one of the most consistently good bowlers,” said Jim Callahan, the award sponsor, speaking for coach Tim Powers. “Jeff is also helpful with the less experienced bowling and often gives them pointers to get better.”
Powers said Bloch is a joy to be around. He makes jokes and starts interesting conversations.
“When he’s a really good mood, he might even sing you some of his favorite songs,” he said.
Bloch especially likes music from the 1950s and ’60s. One of his favorite albums is “South of the Border” by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.
Bloch is also a huge college football fan.
“Jeff is truly a genuine character, and I encourage you to say hello to him if you see him out eating at his favorite restaurants: I-HOP on State Street, Islands and Panda Express,” Powers said.
