The mere making of money motivates many in their worldly endeavors. Yet, there is so much more to life than accruing worldly wealth.
Early in my corporate work life I attempted to accrue personal wealth, but much of that wealth was quickly consumed.
Now, there’s nothing wrong with putting money aside for the future. In fact, during my insurance career, I always stressed the importance of saving at least a small portion of a client’s income for their family’s future needs.
There’s much sound advice found in Scripture dealing with the handling of money.
Certainly, the Lord provides for our needs, but He also expects us to work and be rewarded for our obedience in using His gifts wisely.
After all, if we are not careful, those resources will slip through our fingers.
In 1 Timothy 6:10, the Apostle Paul shares with his young protégé, Timothy, “The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. Some people eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.”
Now Paul is not condemning the accumulation of money, but he is warning Timothy to watch out for those in the assembly who place a greater love on the accumulation of wealth than their love of God.
Not much has changed through the centuries. Certainly, the Industrial Revolution made the making of money more critical since it moves the wheel to greater entrepreneurial accomplishments.
The capitalization of business comes with risks. And many place their focus on financial opportunities rather than their relationship to the One giving them the necessary resources for their financial success.
These days much money can quickly be made and lost in the stocks and commodities markets. But there’s no guarantee it will be there tomorrow.
May I suggest that we would all be better off seeking the Lord. As noted in Matthew 6:33:
“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness and all these things will be given to you as well.”
That was the favorite verse of our family’s long-time pastor, Dr. E.R. Mitchell. He and his wife, Sandy, have been with our Lord for many years now, truly enjoying His kingdom!
Our Heavenly Father is the ultimate provider for all. And as long as we put our hands to the plow, He will provide for all our needs.
