Carpinteria’s Rincon Designs could open up again as soon as May, the Moore family confirmed to Noozhawk.
Carpinteria native Matt Moore owned and operated the Rincon Designs surf shop and a backroom surfboard shaping room in a few locations around town for 45 years before shutting down last March. The landlord of Rincon Designs’ home since 1998 had put the brown plank and bright blue storefront at 659 Linden Ave. up for sale.
Before it shut down, Rincon Designs was an all-hands-in family venture, run by Moore, his children and his grandchildren.
That included his son, Ryan, and daughter-in-law Ashley. Ryan and Ashley Moore operate three other businesses in Carpinteria: Heritage Goods & Supply, Lucky Llama Coffee House and Sunburst Wine Bar.
Late last year, Ashley Moore’s father, Scott Smigel, decided to buy 659 Linden Ave. (Smigel owns the other three properties the Moores operate out of.)
“(Smigel) asked me to lunch one day, about six months ago or so, and said he’d made an offer on the building, unexpectedly,” Ryan Moore told Noozhawk. “I was certainly as surprised as anyone.”
After talking it over with the rest of the family, Ryan and Matt Moore decided it was time to give Rincon Designs another go.
The pair said they have received a lot of “shockingly positive” feedback since rumors of their reopening began to trickle through the tight-knit community.
The Moores are eyeing an early- to mid-May opening for the surf shop, just in time for Memorial Day and the summer rush. They are setting things up “as we speak,” the pair said on Wednesday.
The newest iteration of Rincon Designs will have a more open floor plan, but with similar offerings: surfboards, wetsuits and T-shirts. A new change, however, will be the addition of Patagonia Surf, as well as Florence Marine, a Hawaiian brand.
“I think it’s going to be a core surf shop, where people can come and talk to someone who is very knowledgeable about ordering custom surfboards,” Matt Moore said, describing this latest iteration of Rincon Design as a place for “all ages and families.”
He plans to reopen his shaping room as well, though he never stopped shaping — albeit at other locations — since closing down last year.
“We’re excited,” he said. “(…) Everyone’s got these good ideas, so it’s a really good melting pot.”

Zoë Bikini Soft Lands in Victoria Building
Zoë Bikini — the home of Santa Barbara’s iconic, bikini-fabric heart-shaped trucker hats — has found a temporary home in the Victoria Building at 27 E. Victoria St., Suite B, while owner Zoë Magee searches for a larger space.
Magee, a Santa Barbara local, had spent 4½ years at 429 State St. in Santa Barbara before the building was put up for sale. She was told she had to be out by Dec. 31 and called it a “really unfortunate departure.”
She opened up her new space to the public last week and said she was impressed and happy that a lot of people came through.
“The community has been so supportive and just understanding,” she said.
She plans to be in the Victoria Building for six months and is actively searching for a larger storefront. She asked community members to send her a message on Instagram @zoebikini or call her at 415.250.1377 if they see anything.
In the meantime, Magee has set up small racks of clothes and bikinis in that space and will do pop-ups around town.
Valentine’s Day Crafts, Rebrand On the Table for Mosaic Hub
The Curative Collective’s Mosaic Makers Market — a downtown monthly market that operates out of the Mosaic Locale at 1131 State St. in Santa Barbara — is now the Mosaic Makers Hub.
Lead organizer Tiffany Lytle told Noozhawk the rebranding was done to move away from the transactional advertising of a traditional market.
“We don’t want people to just be like, ‘Hey, we’re here, come shop for us,’” Lytle said. “(…) If we combine markets with community activations, with things that people can interact with for free or for really affordable prices, that gives us things to do in town that are not super expensive.”
On the schedule for Saturday’s hub is a Valentine’s Day-themed do-it-yourself card-making station and tables for SB Resiste, an immigrant activist group, and a local Girl Scouts troop, as well as other small businesses and operators.
“We like to create some spaces we can for nonprofits, for really good causes,” Lytle said.
Updates are available online on Instagram at @mosaicmakershub and @beachsidebabesmarket. A website should be live next month, Lytle said.

Mobile Sauna Coming to Funk Zone
A mobile sauna is coming to the Topa Topa Brewing and Fox Wine Co. patio the next two weekends, courtesy of Third Space.
Third Space will set up a 12-foot Finnish cedar sauna, as well as cold plunge tubs, at 120 Santa Barbara St. in the Funk Zone on Feb. 15-17 and Feb. 22-24. Reservations can be made online.
Third Space co-founder Joey McGuinness said he had the idea to create a mobile sauna after visiting a community sauna in London.
“It turned my idea of the traditional spa on its head. That night, I texted my partner, Eli (Pearlman), and said, ‘Let’s start a community sauna in Santa Barbara,’” McGuinness said in a news release.
The pair plan to set up at regular locations in Santa Barbara and Goleta with sliding-scale pricing.
