The East Beach volleyball courts have become a Hall of Fame for the sport in Santa Barbara.

On Saturday, John Hanley became the latest local legend to have a court named in his honor.

Court 15 on the eastern end of the famed volleyball venue is now the John Hanley Court.

He joins his sister, Kathy Hanley, childhood friend Karch Kiraly, Henry Bergman, Kathy Gregory and Paul Hodgert as the other local legends who have courts dedicated in their names.

The court dedications are made possible by the Friends of East Beach Association and the Santa Barbara City Parks & Recreation Department.

Kiraly, a three-time Olympic volleyball gold medalist and the coach of Tokyo Olympics-bound USA Women’s Indoor National Team, was on hand to see his friend be honored.

Kiraly and Hanley were teammates at Santa Barbara High and a dominant duo on the courts at East Beach.

Kiraly told KEYT that he and Hanley would hold court at the beach all day against challengers. He said their record was 13 wins.
