After decades of setting the tone for designers and tastemakers at his iconic Culver City showroom, Shane Brown has planted his next big idea firmly in Santa Barbara County.
Alongside his wife, Kristine, Brown has unveiled The Well Gardens, a nine-acre Carpinteria property across from the Santa Barbara Polo & Racquet Club that feels less like a retail space and more like an escape.
Fans of Brown’s work — and mine — may already know his earlier Well properties in Summerland, which, as I’ve written about previously here and here, helped redefine the area as a destination for design, lifestyle and community.
I stopped by the grand opening last month at the newest addition, at 3376 Foothill Road, and “escape” might actually be an understatement.
It felt like stepping into a dream — or at least a very well-curated version of paradise.
About 700 people came through that day, including designers from Los Angeles and San Francisco who made the trip just to see it in person.
Brown’s signature iron greenhouses were overflowing with flowering plants, sculptural succulents and climbing vines, all arranged with the kind of effortless beauty he’s known for.
There were cozy seating areas tucked around fountains and firepits, a charming pen of friendly alpacas, and a lantern-lit historic oak tree that quickly became the star of the show.
Local culinary artist Mark Gonzalez of The Good Square kept guests well fed, while a DJ set the tone for a day that felt equal parts garden party and design pilgrimage.
The Well Gardens will offer a curated mix of plants tailored to coastal California living — think olive trees in every size, Mediterranean varieties and California natives.
Inside the greenhouses, Brown is gradually unpacking a treasure trove of antiques and one-of-a-kind finds, with inventory arriving from his Culver City space, Round Top and beyond.
With more than 2,000 square feet indoors, he finally has room to stretch — and, for the first time, shoppers can browse his collection online.
But retail is only part of the vision. Brown hopes to turn The Well Gardens into a true community hub.
“I see this as so much more than a retail space,” he told Noozhawk. “I want it to be a place where people come together — for classes, for music, for creativity.”
With room to grow — literally — it’s a space designed to evolve, and one worth revisiting often.
The Well Gardens is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, or by appointment.
