In Loving Memory of Kathlene Rae Maas
Born on April 6, 1934, in Seattle, Washington, to Rex and Katherine Hess, Kathlene lived a life brimming with love, accomplishment and purpose.
She graduated magna cum laude from New Mexico Highlands University in 1958 with a bachelor’s degree in Spanish and music.
Her passion for education and the arts shone brightly as she taught for three years in Washington state and four years in Panama before earning her master’s degree in Spanish from Arizona State University in 1967.
An inspiring teacher and choir director, Kathlene dedicated eight years to teaching in Trona, California, while also leading school and church choirs.
In January of 1970, she married Erwin B. Maas, and together they welcomed their daughter Shelley in December of the same year. In 1994, they moved to Nipomo, California, and later to Santa Maria in 1998 where they joyfully resided, happy to leave the desert behind and loving their new neighborhood and community.
A woman of many talents, Kathlene developed a keen interest in gemstones in the 1970s, learning to facet and create exquisite jewelry.
With her husband by her side after his retirement, she turned her passion into a thriving business, attending gem and mineral club shows throughout California. In later years, she found delight and success in running her own Etsy shop, showcasing her creativity and eye for beauty.
Known for her devotion to God, her love of family, and her deep care for animals, Kathlene had an unparalleled zest for life.
She was a skilled Bridge player, a talented photographer, and an avid fisherwoman who found peace in her daily walks. Friends and family knew her as a rock of support, always willing to lend an ear or offer guidance.
A perfectionist by nature, she tackled every endeavor with focus and determination. Her humor —sometimes delightfully dark — brought laughter to many, even in the most unexpected moments.
While her accomplishments were many, Kathlene remained humble, always quick to celebrate others.
Her unwavering faith and commitment to what truly mattered — her relationships with God, her loved ones, and her furry companions — were the cornerstone of her life.
As we remember her, we take solace in knowing she hoped to continue singing in the next life, a testament to her enduring spirit and love for music.
Kathlene leaves behind a legacy of love, joy and resilience that will forever remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known her.
