A new car wash is rolling forward in Santa Barbara’s La Cumbre area.
Conserv Fuel, at 150 S. La Cumbre Road, plans to expand into the adjacent property to build a self-serve, drive-through car wash at the intersection of La Cumbre Plaza Lane.
A single-story building on the site, the former home of La Cumbre Animal Hospital, is to be demolished.
The owners of the gas station, Dansk Investment Group in Moorpark, want to add seven parking spaces and two vacuum spaces as part of a combining of the two lots, which sit between Five Points Shopping Center and La Cumbre Plaza, a block south of State Street.
The Architectural Board of Review voted 5-0 last week to support the project, which still needs final design approval at a future meeting.
“Nothing but positive comments on this beautiful project,” board member Richard Six said.
The board members liked the revised design, now with Spanish architecture, and the type and number of trees, including olive trees.

The architects have elaborate plantings to soften the look of the car wash from the La Cumbre Road view.
The project also extends the sidewalk over asphalt near the Five Points Center, making a driveway between the gas station and car wash compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Extensive plantings and permeable paving on a corner of the project is included to control drainage.
The car wash entrance would be from South La Cumbre Lane bordering Petco in the Five Points Center.
The design is intended to tie the nearby Conserv Fuel lot and the car wash together.
The corner lot has been vacant since La Cumbre Animal Hospital moved to 3910 State St. nearby.
