Laguna Blanca lost a tight, tough Frontier League boys basketball game against Villanova Prep on Wednesday, 39-36.

Laguna Blanca coach Phil Sherman described the physical contest as “an old fashioned 1980’s Big East slugfest” at Laguna.

Each team played tough defense, which made baskets hard to come by.

Laguna Blanca suffered a blow when its leading scorer and rebounder was called for his fourth foul and was hit with a technical foul that disqualified in from the game.

“The two fouls came at a bad time as our player was just figuring out the Wildcat scheme against him.

“The kids were disappointed in the loss, but I felt they played great all things considered”

Villanova Prep took its largest lead of the game at 37-31. But Charlie Sheldon hit a NBA-range three-pointer and Mike Wang made two free throws that pulled Laguna Blanca within one point, 37-36.

The Owls fouled intentionally with 11 seconds left and Villanova Prep made two free throws to go up 39-36. Laguna Blanca tgot a great look at a game tying three-pointer that fell short to end the game.

Carson Stewart led Laguna Blanca with 14 points.
