Laguna Blanca remained undefeated on the season at 4-0 after pulling out a 10-8 win over visiting Carpinteria Tuesday.
Warrior brothers Austin and Max Stone accounted for six of Carpinteria’s sets, sweeping the Owls with the loss of only one game between them.
Laguna Blanca prevailed 7-2 in doubles. Ben Rodgers and freshman Davis Ohanian swept their sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.
The teams of Aden Meisel/Mason Berg and Cody Busch-Weiss/Jake Gidney each won two sets for the Owls, both losing only to Carpinteria’s Matthew Endow and Ryan Souza.
In singles, Laguna Blanca seniors Owen Pryor and Kai Suzuki and junior Kent Dunn each won a set, to bring the Owls to 10.
“We came in with a gameplan to neutralize Carp’s obvious strength at the top singles spots, and the guys really committed to it,” Laguna Blanca coach Trevor Thorpe said.
“… Carpinteria is always tough and they know how to play doubles, so that makes what our guys did today all the more impressive to me.”
Laguna Blanca plays next Tuesday at Villanova in Ojai to open Tri-Valley League play.
Carpinteria is now 4-3 and opens Citrus Coast League play Thursday against Nordhoff.
“We played well, but just not well enough, as we just could not get over the hump in most of the doubles sets the rest of the day,” Carpinteria coach Charles Bryant said.
Santa Ynez 17, Lompoc 1
The Santa Ynez boys ran their overall record to 5-0 with a Channel League win over Lompoc Tuesday by a score of 17-1.
The Pirates’ No. 1 singles player Micah Thomas won hits sets 6-0, 6-0, and the doubles team of Micah Thompson and Marc Westall swept sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
“They have been playing very well together the last couple of weeks,” Santa Ynez coach Nate Thompson said.
“We had a fun time on the courts today versus Lompoc,” Thompson said. “Both sides gave a strong effort for the whole match.”
The Pirates face Santa Barbara Thursday.
Nordhoff 14, Bishop Diego 4
Bishop Diego fell to Nordhoff Tuesday, 14-4.
The Cardinals’ No. 3 singles player, Daniel Kagramanov, went 2-1 in his sets.
“His placement was well directed and his strategy dynamic,” Bishop Diego coach Natlee Hapeman said. “You could feel the determination in his game.”
The Cardinals’ record is now 1-1. They face Carpinteria on March 16.
“Today’s loss was difficult,” Hapeman said. “The student athletes played hard and their hearts were in it, but Nordoff was the stronger team today.
“As a team, they are working the strategy and trying some awesome shots. We celebrate the small success today.”
