Laguna Blanca got key wins from Madeleine Nicks and freshman Mina Yazadzhiev to beat Providence on total games, 86-77, after the teams tied 9-9 in sets in a girls tennis match on Thursday.

Nicks won two sets (6-1, 6-3) and Yazadzhiev scored a 6-0 victory to help the Owls take the season-opening match.

Ava Vandever of Providence swept her three sets at No. 1 singles (6-3, 6-3, 6-4) and Christine Venzor won two sets (6-2, 6-4) for the Patriots. In doubles, Chloe Olsen/Mia Vandever went 2-1 (6-4, 7-5, 2-6).

New Laguna No. 2 team of Nicole Khodabandehlou and Phoebe Stein went 2-1 and Dare Fitzpartic/Katherine Ball took a set off Olsen/Vandever.
