The Laguna Blanca boys moved to 6-1 on the season with a 14-4 Tri-Valley League win over Bishop Diego Thursday.

Doubles spearheaded the Owls’ win, with seniors Owen Pryor and George Nicks taking 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 set wins and the junior/sophomore duo of Cody Busch-Weiss and Jake Gidney also sweeping.

Bishop Diego’s No. 1 singles player Giovanni Basoccu, an exchange student from Italy, swept his sets, 6-4, 6-2, 6-3.

“Gio played hard in the heat today,” Cardinals coach Natlee Hapeman said.  “His endurance and speed cover the court well. His service was a big part of his game today. Gio’s offensive game was strong today. His placement and strategy continue to work the whole court.”

For Laguna Blanca, the win was a bounce-back.

“We came with a lot of energy today, which was great to see after our first loss of the season on Tuesday,” Owls coach Trevor Thorpe said. “Thacher caught us on day two after a two-week spring break, and although we didn’t play poorly, we lacked some of the spark that had carried us through a number of close matches in the first half of the season.

“This match against Bishop Diego was a good one to get the ship pointed in the right direction again as we head into a three-match week next week.”

Bishop Diego is now 1-4 in TVL play and 2-8 overall.
