People’s Self-Help Housing’s (PSHH)’s unique property, Heath House, has received recognition for outstanding contributions to the health and beauty of Santa Barbara through the 2021 Golden Leaf Awards. Presented by Santa Barbara Beautiful, the historic home was selected as the recipient of the Presidents Award in commemoration of PSHH’s recent rehabilitation of the site.

“We very much appreciate the opportunity to be recognized for the work achieved at Heath House this past year,” said Ken Trigueiro, PSHH CEO/president “Not only is the property fully restored and a credit to the community, but it is now providing a safe, supportive space for formerly homeless women in Santa Barbara.

“This was a highly collaborative project, and we share this high honor with our many development partners and generous supporters who made it possible.”

Previously serving as a hospice for AIDS patients, the Heath House property had fallen into disrepair, and was purchased by PSHH in 2020. After extensive rehabilitation, the landmark reopened this spring to serve formerly homeless women in the community.

The 2,500-square-foot property now serves the community with seven bedrooms, five bathrooms, multiple common areas, a shared kitchen, and a dining room. Building on the considerable success of its programming at the nearby Victoria Hotel, and in Ventura the historic El Patio Hotel, PSHH offers all residents onsite supportive services at no charge.

Each year, Santa Barbara Beautiful recognizes important beautification projects throughout the city through the Golden Leaf Awards. From small single-family homes to estate gardens, civic buildings, theaters, placing art in public places, the awards single out exemplary properties that expand Santa Barbara‘s beauty.

The President’s Award, which was received by PSHH this year, provides recognition to individuals and organizations that have made unique contributions to the ongoing health and beauty of the community.
