Will Henry and Kali Kopley, owners of Pico Los Alamos, want to heighten awareness for the familiar “farm-to-table” mantra with their new “Know Thy Farmer” series, starting this month.

Seats will be limited to 30 people so that guests can meet and mingle with the hosting farmers and winemakers, Henry said.

“We want to sit and eat with people who grow what’s on (our) table,” he noted.

The duo’s goal is to highlight how farmers bring produce, beef and poultry from “ground” to table.

“Most people aren’t connected to their food source,” Henry said.

Each event will pair a local farmer with a winemaker and vineyard manager.

While the Saturday, April 29 event featuring Sea Smoke Winery and Motley Crew Ranch has sold out, the second in the series will be Saturday, June 24 and feature Story of Soil winemaker/owner Jessica Gasca and Elderflat Farm of Los Alamos, from which Pico regularly sources produce, Henry said.

Pico’s chef, Cameron Ingle, came west from Blue Hill Farm in upstate New York.

“He is used to sourcing produce for a restaurant,” Henry told me.

Ingle hopes the Pico series will educate people “about where their food comes from. We hope to bridge the gap between farmer and diner,” he said.

Henry noted that chef Ingle relocated to California in part to be able to utilize fresh produce every day. “Cameron also has his own plot” of vegetables and herbs to put toward our meals, Henry said, as does Pico, in a garden area amid the eatery’s outdoor seating.

“We continue to support mom and pop small farmers,” he said.
