The city of Goleta is partnering with the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office and the Greater Goleta Santa Barbara Lions Club to provide a scam-prevention presentation for the community, including seniors and their care providers.
The program, titled Name that Tune, Stop that Scam!, will be 10 a.m. Monday, April 15 at the Goleta Community Center, 5679 Hollister Ave.
Participants will learn about the latest local and nationwide scams, how to protect oneself from them, and what to do if you or someone you know has fallen victim to a scam.
Crooks use clever schemes to defraud millions of people every year, so community members are urged to stay a step ahead with the latest information and practical tips.
Unfortunately, senior citizens are known to be prime targets for scammers. One in five seniors has been a victim of abuse or fraud and in nearly 90% of elder abuse and neglect incidents, the perpetrator is a family member, according to reports.
If you or someone you know needs help, contact the Santa Barbara District Attorney Elder/Dependent Adult Abuse Hotline, 805-568-2442.
For questions about the presentation, email JoAnne Plummer, Goleta Parks and Recreation manager, at jplummer@cityofgoleta.org.
