San Marcos senior Leo Metzger qualified for the 122nd  U.S. Amateur Championship on Monday at a qualifying tournament at La Cumbre Country Club.

Metzger was one of two golfers to advance out of a field of 69 players at the two-round qualifier. 

Owen Avrit, of Arroyo Grande and the University of Oregon, won the event with a 36-hole score of 10-under par 130. Metzger shot 137 and tied with Adam Anderson for second. The reigning Santa Barbara City Champion beat Anderson in a one-hole playoff for the U.S. Amateur berth.

Anderson is the first alternate and Blake Barens (138) is the second alternate.

The U.S. Amateur will be played Aug. 15-21 at The Ridgewood Country Club in Paramus, N.J.

Metzger also won the Santa Barbara City Championship in a playoff back in May, tying for the second youngest champion in tournament history.

He’s a back-to-back Channel League individual championships.

Metzger shot a 1-under 69 in the first round and was in fifth place. He shot a 2-under 68 in the second round.

Avrit shot rounds of 66 and 64. 

Tyler See of Costa Mesa and Brian Arnold of Pasadena were in second place after the first round at 67. See shot 76 and Arnold a 79 in the second round.

San Marcos junior Shams Jahangir-Arshad had the next lowest score for a local player with a 1-under 139 (72-67).
