Leo Metzger and Teddy Vigna, two of the top high school golfers in the area, share the first-round lead at the Santa Barbara Classic at the Santa Barbara Golf Club.
Metzger, a senior at San Marcos, and Vigna, a sophomore at Dos Pueblos, shot an 8-under par 62 on Saturday in the two-man, best-ball tournament. They are tied with the team of Volz-Smith from the Golf Club at Sterling Hills in Camarillo.
Metzger is tuning up for next week’s U.S. Amateur in Paramus, N.J.
Three teams are one stroke back in the gross-scoring Santa Cruz Championship Flight.
In net-scoring, three teams share the lead in the San Miguel Flight. James Tricase/Michael Holmstrom, Jonathan Medina/Todd Johnson, and Mark Manion/Mike Westmacott are all at 6-under going into Sunday’s final round.
Darren Taylor/David Hurlbut lead the Santa Rosa Flight at 8-under par and Chad Stevens/Jeffrey Steele are tied for first in the Anacapa Flight with Jonathan Blinderman/Rick Gerard at 3-under.
In the Women’s Division, Marcy Luikart/Marylou Ramos are at 2-under, one shot ahead of Gail Harling/Kathy Patton.
