Officers shot a man twice with “less-lethal” rounds Wednesday night before arresting him in connection with a family disturbance, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

The incident occurred at a residence on the 2400 block of North Bentley Avenue, where the man reportedly was preventing family members from leaving the home, police said.

The suspect, David Alcala, allegedly was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time, police said.

Officers established a containment around the home and began efforts to safely resolve the incident.

“Officers utilized de-escalation tactics,” police said, “including maintaining distance and making repeated announcements over a public address system in an attempt to establish communication with Alcala and gain his voluntary compliance.”

Alcala refused to follow the officers’ orders, police said, and eventually exited the residence and charged toward them.

At that point, officers shot Alcala with a 40-mm less-lethal round in an effort to gain compliance, but he continued advancing toward them, and a police K-9 was deployed to apprehend him.

Alcala continued resisting the efforts to take him into custody, police said, and a second 40-mm less-lethal round was deployed.

That led to Alcala’s arrest, and he was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment.

He subsequently was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of elder abuse, resisting an executive officer, kidnapping, false imprisonment and violation of probation, police said.

The incident remained under investigation Wednesday night.
