Lila Anne “Hebe” Bartz, born on Aug. 17, 1927, and a vibrant presence in the lives of her loved ones, passed away on Jan. 17, 2024, surrounded by her family.

She was a woman of exceptional generosity, creativity and whimsy, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and artistic inspiration that will forever be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.

For over five decades, Hebe dedicated her time and energy to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History as a docent. Her commitment to the museum’s mission showcased her deep appreciation for the natural world and her desire to share that knowledge with others. In her role, she enriched the lives of countless visitors and staff members.

Hebe’s creativity knew no bounds as she delved into knitting, felting, and jewelry-making, infusing her unique, whimsical touch into every piece. Her home was a haven of artistic endeavors, with a book always in hand and an ongoing art project to complete.

Dede, as her family called her, is survived by her son Patrick; two grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Her warmth and welcoming spirit will be missed by all who knew her.
