The local trio of Bishop Diego, Dos Pueblos and Laguna Blanca boys volleyball competed in the second annual Bishop Quad alongside Oxnard High on Saturday inside the Brick House.
“We had a great day here in the Brick House for our second annual Quad,” Bishop Diego head coach Dillan Bennett said. “I’m thankful for Dos Pueblos, Oxnard, and Laguna Blanca for joining us for a great day of volleyball.
“For the Cardinals, we have plenty to get better at as the season gets underway. “
Bishop Diego
The host Cardinals went 2-0 on the day with victories over Oxnard and Dos Pueblos.
Bishop Diego took down Oxnard in straight sets, 25-22, 25-14, 25-23, before besting the Chergaers in four sets, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-15.
“Today, we did a lot of very good things offensively because of the way we served and passed the ball,” Bennett said. “Our service pressure was a big reason why we earned two wins today.
“Our serve reception was another contributing factor in addition to our setter, Luke Walters. Luke did a really nice job of distributing the ball, and our offense ran very well today.”
John Michael Flint dominated on the outside for the Cardinals with 14 kills against Oxnard and 28 kills to go along with 12 digs in the win over Dos Pueblos.
Meanwhile, Damien Krautmann picked up 11 kills and nine digs against Oxnard before recording a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs against the Chargers.
“When we were able to move our hitters around to find them matchups at the net, we were very successful,” Benett said. “We are fortunate enough to have really good athletes on the team this year, so maximizing their athleticism has been a priority.
We also had a good day of growth from a leadership standpoint – John Michael Flint, Damien Krautmann, and Tyler Roberts were the leaders on the stat sheet, but they have also become an extension of the coaching staff.”
Bishop Diego (3-0, 1-0 Tri-Valley) will host Del Sol on Tuesday.
Dos Pueblos
The Chargers split their Bishop Quad, picking up a victory over Laguna Blanca and falling to Bishop Diego.
Dos Pueblos secured its win over the Laguna Blanca Owls in four sets, 25-12, 25-14, 23-25, 25-21.
“We had a lot of success from the service line this morning, keeping the pressure on the opponent,” Charger head coach Ehren Hug said.
Evan Daugherty recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs, while Ben Wojogbe fell just short with 11 kills and nine digs. Meanwhile, Enzo DeMatteo racked up 13 digs, Tennyson Riley served up three aces and Caleb Damron recorded five blocks and four kills.
In the loss to Bishop Diego, Wojogbe led Dos Pueblos with 10 kills and Daugherty collected six kills, three blocks, two aces and two digs.
The Chargers will host Oak Park on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
Laguna Blanca
The Owls dropped both of their Bishop Quad matches against Dos Pueblos and Oxnard to begin their season.
After the four-set loss to the Chargers, Laguna Blanca fell to Oxnard in four sets, 23-25, 21-25, 25-12, 14-25.
“Overall, this was a great opening day for us. We made great strides during both matches and competed at a high level all day long,” Laguna Blanca head coach Jason Donnelly said. “Most of our guys were playing in a brand new position today and got some much-needed experience against tough competition. There is a lot to build on going forward.”
Soren Alldredge led the Owls’ offense with 44 kills across the two matches, while Baylor Wilson racked up 61 total assists.
Laguna Blanca will host Cate for the Tri-Valley League opener on Thursday at 5 p.m.
