The cities of Ventura and Oxnard, Ventura County Fire Department, and California State Parks are teaming up to support the deconstruction of the temporary sand berms along the Ventura County coastline.

The scheduled deconstruction of the two sand berms will begin Monday, March 4, ahead of the upcoming nesting season of the federally protected Western Snowy Plover bird.

Built on Dec. 28, 2023, in response to potential risks posed by high surf and storm surges, the two berms, spanning 0.75 miles in Ventura and two miles in Oxnard, are now slated for removal to ensure the preservation of natural habitats and the safety of local wildlife during the approaching nesting season.

“The delicate balance between environmental conservation and public safety is paramount to us all,” said Ventura Mayor Joe Schroeder. “The removal and redistribution of sand along the beaches is a collaborative effort and essential in fostering a conducive environment for the protection and preservation of vulnerable species.”

The work is expected to take about five days, operating between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. During the process, heavy machinery, including three Ventura County Fire bulldozers and supporting beach grading equipment from the city of Oxnard and State Parks, will be working in conjunction to clear debris ahead of redispersing the sand along the coastline.

Community members are urged to stay clear of the designated work areas to ensure a safe, smooth, and efficient removal process.
