The local beach volleyball pair of Benicio Duarte and Drake Young won the California Beach Volleyball Association Men’s B Tournament at Santa Monica’s Ocean Beach last Saturday.

The title earned the East Beach players their “A” rating on the beach.

DP Alum Ethan Parrish Scores 2 vs. UCSB

Former Dos Pueblos star Ethan Parrish scored two goals and added an assist to help Stanford beat UCSB, 13-10, in a nonconference men’s water polo game at Campus Pool last Saturday.

Santa Barbara Soccer Club Names New President

Sheralyn Baltes has been appointed and voted in as the new president of the Santa Barbara Soccer Club.

She replaces Tim Vom Steeg, who helped guide the club through challenging times during COVID shutdown.

Vom Steeg is in his 25th year coaching the UCSB men’s soccer program.

The SBSC is now a full academy in the MLS Next Academy program. The club offers six age groups, from Under-13 to U19.

Last year’s 2009 age-group team finished ranked in the top-25 nationally for boys club teams, said the SBSC.

This year’s Boys U19 team will become the academy’s first team to graduate out of the system after this year. 

Westmont Golf Plays First NCAA Event

Westmont Men’s Golf competed against old and new rivals at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational and finished fourth out of the sixth teams in the three-round event in Bodega Bay.

Sonoma State took first place with a team score of 17-over par 857 .Chico State finished second (880) and Menlo finished third (891). Westmont (917) finished ahead of PacWest foes Dominican (922) and Academy of Art (935)

“It was our first NCAA event,” said Westmont head coach Josh Ault,” and it was great to be at a new venue, see some new teams, and compete. We had a few players not at 100%, but the men fought bravely. We have a good team and the men play hard for each other, and for Westmont.”

Andy Knight was Westmont’s top finisher in 12th place.

The men will next compete on Oct. 9, when they host the Westmont Invitational at Sandpiper Golf Course.

UCSB Cross Country Oregon Bound

The UC Santa Barbara Men’s and Women’s Cross Country will compete at the University of Oregon’s Dellinger Invite on Friday, Sept. 19. After a week’s rest from their previous meet, the Gauchos

The Gauchos last weekend attended the UC Riverside Invitational, where the men placed 15th out of 22 teams and the women placed 12th out of 21 teams. 

Gus Marshall and Aakersh Mather were the top two men’s finishers for the Gauchos, while Leah Mendibles and Lexi Darley led the way for the women. 

SBCC Women’s Volleyball Falls in 5

The Santa Barbara City College Women’s Volleyball team lost a five-set thriller to College of the Canyons on Friday at the Sports Pavilion.

The scores were 11-25, 25-22, 25-10, 17-25, 15-11.

“Our first five-set match of the year unfortunately didn’t end in our favor,” said coach Kat Niksto.

Heidi Collins and Chaya Clemons led the team with 10 and 8 kills, respectively. Setter Natalie Lercari-Sullivan and Sophie Ward dished out 25 and 13 assists, respectively. Alexis (Birdie) Zevenbergen led in digs with nine.

SBCC bounced back with a five-set win over Hartnell and a sweep of Monterey Peninsula at the Cuesta Quad last Saturday. The Vaqueros are 5-7 on the season. They played at Santa Monica and Wednesday and host Bakersfield on Friday.
