Santa Barbara High track & field sent a tandem of athletes down to the Mt. San Antonio College Invitational on Saturday in Walnut.
Elina Stump continued her stellar season with a second-place finish and lifetime-best time of 14.45 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles. She also took seventh in the long jump and 11th in the triple jump.
“[Stump] is not afraid to test herself with the best competition she can. She keeps picking up new personal bests and putting more tools in her box,” Santa Barbara High head coach Oliva Perdices said.
Malachi Johnston was the other individual competitor for the Dons, claiming fourth place in the shot put with a throw of 52-3.
Meanwhile, the Santa Barbara High boys 4×800 relay team of Lucca Lowry, Ethan Walp, Noah Davis and Kik Van Engelen ran a season-best time of 8:29.52 to claim 10th place.
“The guys came in and competed well in a big meet and a big venue. They got some valuable experience and left wanting more from the rest of the season,” Perdices said.
Santa Barbara High will compete in the County Championships next Saturday at Righetti High.
San Marcos
Logan Patterson Deakyne stood out for the Royals, winning the Invitational 400-meter hurdles race.
“[Patterson Deakyne] continues to learn from each race he runs. There is always something to work on to improve and to see all of the progress that has been made,” San Marcos head coach Marilyn Hantgin said.
TJ Deakyne was the only other Royal competing in individual events, placing eighth with a jump of 6-2.
The girls 4×1,600 relay team of Sofi Hernandez, Autumn Richardson, Layla Llewellyn and Elsie Tuttle came together to take fifth place.
“They really competed well in this very competitive race. We fought hard the entire race, moving up in the race to capture 5th,” Hantgin said.
In the boys 4×400 relay, Wyatt Degner, Alex Silva, Dalton Shupe and Patterson Deakyne crossed the finish line in 3:25 to secure eight place.
Meanwhile, the Royals had a pair of teams competing in the boys 4×1,600 relay. Nate Daughters, Audric Halberg, August Singer and Degner came in 29th, while Walker Gregorio, Drew Vogel, Everett Young and Brogan Hemphill placed 44th out of 60 teams.
“These races were very competitive. The atmosphere was pretty exciting, running under the lights at a meet like Mt. SAC,” Hantgin said.
Dos Pueblos
The Chargers sent 13 student-athletes to the Mt. SAC Relays this weekend.
Dos Pueblos seniors Owen Abbott, Ashton Smedley and Cullen Gully all raced the mile on Friday night, while Phil Contakes and Ian McMurtry competed in the 3,200-meter race.
In the 3,200, Contakes came in fourth place with a time of 9:08.49 and McMurtry finished with a personal-best time of 9:16.51.
Gully then competed in the 800-meter race on Saturday and broke a 45-year-old school record in the event with his mark of 1:54.13.
“I am so proud of Cullen’s determination and resilience. He has trusted the process, and it’s great to see it all coming together this season,” Dos Pueblos head coach Rosina Garcia said.
The Chargers rounded out the weekend with two teams competing in the 4×1,600-meter race, with the ‘A’ team averaging 5:34 per mile.
