Local 12-year-old runners Robbie Fitzgibbons and Elijah Briner capped off their summer seasons with strong showings at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Georgia last weekend.
The duo is a part of the Island Fox Track Club, earning their spots in the national championships after shining at the Southern California Championships in Cerritos and the Region 15 Championships in Las Vegas.
Fitzgibbons excelled in long-distance events, headlined by a silver-medal finish in the 3,000m race with a time of 10:04.91. His performance earned him All-American honors.
He also raced in the 1,500m event, earning a 13th-place finish after crossing the finish line in 4:51.08.
Meanwhile, Briner specialized in sprints, competing in the 100m and 200m dash races on the national stage. He excelled in the 100m, placing 13th in the nation while racing in the semifinals.
Later in the day, he finished the 200m dash with a time of 28.31 seconds to slot into 44th place nationally.
The local duo competed against over 7,000 young athletes from across the country and gave the Island Fox Track Club its first national exposure in its inaugural season.
