Santa Barbara’s Ric Cervantes and Jonah Seif stunned No. 3 seed Paul Lottman and Miles Partain in the first round at the AVP Manhattan Open beach volleyball tournament on Friday.
Cervantes/Seif pulled out a three-set victory against the team that won last week’s AVP event in Atlanta. The scores 16-21, 21-17, 15-12.
In their second-round match, Cervantes/Seif lost a three-set match against Jake Dietrich/Hagen Smith, 21-17, 16-21, 15-9.
Cervantes/Seif were knocked out of the tournament by Caleb Kwekel/Ian Satterfield, 21-14, 21-12.
Cervantes is a Santa Barbara High alum and Seif is a former UCSB setter from Thousand Oaks.
The local team of Shane Cervantes and Will Rottman went out in two matches. The SBHS alums lost to Chase Budinger/Troy Field in the first round and were eliminated by Kwekle/Satterfield in the elimination bracket.
The team of former UCSB middle blocker Theo Brunner and partner Claim Schalk, the tournament’s No. seed, won two matches on Friday. Also winning two matches was the duo of Santa Barbara High alum Jeremy Casebeer and partner Billy Allen.
On the women’s side, the local duo of Katie Spieler/Carly Wopat lost to seventh-seeded Sarah Pavan/Mackenzie Bonnet, 21-19, 21-16, in the first round and the fell to Brook Bauer/Katie Hortion, 21-16, 21-16.
