The mother of a 1-year-old child who ingested an opioid drug and had to be revived by Lompoc police officers earlier this year pleaded guilty in Santa Barbara County Superior Court in Lompoc on Wednesday to a criminal charge related to the incident.

Jessie McCoy, 37, originally was charged with three felony counts for willful cruelty to a child possibly causing injury or death for the January incident. She also originally faced an allegation that the crime was her second strike under the California three-strikes sentencing law.

At 11:14 a.m. Jan. 5, Lompoc firefighters and American Medical Response personnel were dispatched to the 800 block of North F Street in Lompoc.

Lompoc police officers also responded based on the report of an unresponsive 1-year-old child, with the investigation revealing that the child “was exposed to suspected fentanyl,” police Sgt. Jorge Magana said.

Firefighters and medical personnel administered Narcan at the scene to revive the child, Magana added.

The child’s mother, McCoy, and father, Curtis Roberts, 43, were both arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment, police said.

In exchange to pleading guilty to the one felony count, McCoy will be sentenced to four years in state prison, Senior Deputy District Attorney Madison Whitmore said.

McCoy, who remains in the custody of the Santa Barbara County Jail, is scheduled to return to court July 19 for sentencing.

The case against Roberts, who also remains in the county jail, is scheduled to return to court later this month.
