A vegetation fire was reported in Lompoc Sunday near Allan Hancock College and the Lompoc Federal Correctional Complex, and responding crews called in a water-dropping helicopter in addition to ground crews to fight the blaze.

The brush fire was first reported around 10:50 a.m. south of Allan Hancock College, according to the Lompoc City Fire Department.

Neighboring departments also sent resources to assist the firefighting effort, including the County Fire Department and Vandenberg Fire Department.

Lompoc police said a suspect has been arrested on suspicion of arson related to the blaze. Claudio Nava Santiago, 31, was booked into jail and was being held on $50,000 bail, police said.

“At about 11:24 AM, the Fire Department requested assistance from the Lompoc Police Department near the old drive-in theater as they believed they were with the possible suspect of the fire. Once officers arrived, they determined the subject was in fact related to the fire and placed him under arrest,” police said in a statement Sunday afternoon.

Highway 1 lanes were temporarily closed during the firefighting response.

An incident command post was set up at the Lompoc campus of Allan Hancock College, at Highway 1 and Hancock Drive, to coordinate the firefighting resources.
