A 19-year-old man was arrested late Saturday night after allegedly attempting to kill a man whose vehicle he was trying to carjack, according to the Lompoc Police Department.
The incident began sometime after 10 p.m. on the 1300 block of North L Street, where officers responded to reports of a man pointing a firearm at residents of an apartment complex and demanding their vehicles, said Sgt. Andrew White.
The suspect was identified as Jonathon Garcia.
“A victim advised that Garcia pointed the gun at his head and tried to pull the trigger multiple times while the victim was still in his vehicle,” White said. “The victim fled in his vehicle to call 9-1-1.
“Garcia then found another victim getting into her vehicle and pointed the firearm at her. He ordered her out of the car where she complied and gave him the keys.”
Officers observed Garcia fleeing on Central Avenue and North H Street before he turned onto North D Street, White said.
The vehicle lost control and spun out into a drainage ditch on the 1100 block of North D Street, where Garcia was taken into custody.
“A loaded firearm was located inside the vehicle, and Garcia was also found to be driving under the influence of alcohol,” White said.
Garcia was booked into jail on suspicion of attempted homicide, carjacking, evading arrest, driving under the influence, and commission of a felony with a firearm, police said.
No injuries were reported in the incident.
