The pedestrian who died after being struck by a car on Coast Village Road Sunday evening was identified by Birnam Wood Golf Club as Pedro Rivera, a longtime club bartender.

Rivera was also the assistant general manager at Teddy’s By the Sea in Carpinteria, owner Sarah Dandona confirmed in a GoFundMe post. 

According to a notice sent out to Birnam Wood members from General Manager Jordan Sweeney, Rivera was struck outside of Lucky’s, a steakhouse in Montecito. 

“Our hearts are broken,” Sweeney wrote. “Pedro was a valued member of the Birnam Wood family, and his loss will be deeply felt by all who had the privilege of knowing and working alongside him.

“He served our club with kindness, dedication, and a warm smile that touched so many members and fellow employees over the years.” 

Sweeney said the Birnam Woods Helping Hands Committee will assist Rivera’s family with funeral expenses and any other “immediate needs.”

Rivera is survived by his mother, 92, his brother, his sons, and his granddaughter, Isabella, among other family, according to Dandona. 

He has been a friend of Dandona and her husband — co-owner of Teddy’s By the Sea Juan Rodriguez — for more than 40 years. 

“He was a dear friend, a steady presence, and a beloved member of our community since the day we opened eight years ago,” Dandona said in the GoFundMe. “He cared deeply about everyone he worked with, always proud of what we were building together.” 

The GoFundMe, which had brought in $37,000 as of Wednesday morning, will support funeral and memorial expenses and other needs. 

“Pedro touched so many people at Teddy’s and as a friend, we’re hoping those whom he touched will feel inspired to help,” Dandona said. 

Emergency crews first responded to the 1200 block of Coast Village Road at around 9:50 p.m. and found Rivera unconscious in the roadway, Lt. Ethan Ragsdale said Sunday evening. 

A Santa Barbara Police Department spokesperson later told Noozhawk via email that someone died in the collision. 

The Santa Barbara County Coroner’s Bureau did not respond to a Noozhawk request to independently confirm that person’s name and age.
