Lui Fernandez knocked down a three-pointer from mid-court at the second-quarter buzzer to spark the Bishop Diego boys basketball team to a 72-46 rout of Dunn on Wednesday night at the Brick House.
Fernandez’s shot from the Bishop logo gave the Cardinals a 40-31 halftime lead. He finished with a game-high 26 points.
“I was counting down for them and we had a good 3 seconds left when Lui turned to shoot it,” said coach James Coronado. “I was saying no, no, no … until it went in, and then ha ha. Sometimes the coach just has to keep his mouth shut and let the players do their thing.”
Bryan Trejo scored 13 points for the Cardinals, who improved to 7-1.
“I was pleased with out effort the whole game but I felt out rotations on defense were a little sloppy in the first half,” said Coronado. “But we talked through it at halftime and the players took charge and communicated effectively in the third quarter and made a run.
“Our offense is starting to click as well just in terms of our ball movement and chemistry, so I was pleased on that side of the ball as well.”
He added that Qu’Ran Gossett “continues to provide a spark for the Cardinals with his effort, defense, and passing.”
