One person was transported to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital on Monday with major injuries after back-to-back traffic collisions in Goleta involving a deer.
Emergency crews first responded to Cathedral Oaks Road between Los Carneros and Storke roads at around 11:39 a.m. for a report of vehicle that hit a deer, according to Santa Barbara County Fire Department Capt. Mike Gray.
The deer was killed on impact, and the vehicle’s two occupants were not injured in the initial collision, per Gray.
When one of them “walked to the front of her vehicle to check on the deer and assess damage,” a second vehicle “rear-ended her car, pushing it forward and striking her,” Gray said.
No other injuries were reported, and the cause of the collisions was under investigation, Gray said.
“If your vehicle becomes disabled in the roadway, exit safely and move to a secure location away from traffic,” Gray said. “Avoid distracted driving — it only takes a second to cause serious harm… Please drive safely and stay alert.”
