One person suffered major injuries Monday night when a vehicle ran off Highway 154 and slammed into a tree in the hills above Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department.

The crash occurred at about 6:15 p.m. in the eastbound lanes in the Windy Gap area, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Three people were in the vehicle, said fire Capt. Scott Safechuck, including a woman who was critically injured.

She was taken by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

Her name and details on her condition were not available.

The vehicle, which ended up about 10 feet off the roadway, may have been driving recklessly, the CHP said, adding that a Santa Barbara County sheriff’s deputy detained the female driver, whose name was not available.

The highway was shut down in both directions for a time, then switched to alternating traffic, Safechuck said.

The crash was under investigation by the CHP.
