A driver who crashed their vehicle off Highway 154 into steep terrain was transported to the hospital with major injuries early Wednesday morning, the Santa Barbara County Fire Department said.

The over-the-side crash was reported east of the Lake Cachuma Recreation Area entrance at 2:24 a.m., fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said.

Fire crews were dispatched to a report of debris on the highway and found the vehicle about 30 feet down the hillside, against a tree, he said.

Responders extricated the adult male driver, the only occupant, from the wreckage, and an American Medical Response ambulance transported him to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.

Westbound Highway 154 was briefly closed during the emergency response, Safechuck said.

No further details were available.
