A male juvenile was taken to the hospital Thursday evening after suffering an apparently accidental gunshot wound at a residence in Orcutt, according to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies, county firefighters and an AMR ambulance were dispatched shortly before 6:30 p.m. to the home on the 800 block of Brookside Avenue, Raquel Zick, sheriff’s public information officer, told Noozhawk.

The victim suffered a single gunshot wound, reportedly to the chest, Zick said.

“This is being reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound due to a negligent discharge,” Zick said on Friday. “The patient is expected to recover.”

No other details about the incident have been released.

The boy was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with serious injuries, Zick said. His name and details on his condition were not available.

“Investigation remains ongoing, and findings will be forwarded to juvenile probation upon completion,” Zick added.
