A man was arrested in northwest Santa Maria Saturday afternoon after he allegedly threatened a resident, hid in a vacant  structure, and refused to surrender to police.

At 3:12 p.m., Santa Maria Police Department officers responded to the 400 block of North Oakley Avenue where a man armed with a knife threatened a resident, police Lt. Trevor Shalhoob said Sunday.

The man allegedly then unlawfully entered a vacant property where police found him inside a structure.

Shalhoob said the man refused repeated commands to surrender and displayed threatening behavior, including pointing a firearm-like object and a metal pipe toward police.

“Officers employed multiple de-escalation techniques, including verbal commands, warnings, and opportunities to surrender,” Shalhoob said.

When the man continued to resist, officers deployed a distraction device, 40mm less-lethal munition, and a police K-9, which ultimately resulted in his apprehension, Shalhoob added.

The man, Mario Lopez , 40, of Santa Maria, sustained minor injuries and was transported to Marian Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation and treatment.

He was subsequently booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of resisting arrest, brandishing a weapon, trespassing, and violating probation.

On Sunday, Lopez remained in jail custody, and was being held without bail.
