A 38-year-old Santa Maria man died early Monday in a single-vehicle crash in Santa Maria, according to the Santa Maria Police Department.

Police officers, firefighters and other emergency personnel were dispatched shortly before 1 a.m. to the incident on the 800 block of Black Road, Sgt. Shane Armstrong said.

“Preliminary investigation indicates a vehicle was traveling southbound on Black Road when, for reasons still under investigation, it veered into the northbound lane, left the roadway, entered a water ditch, and struck a power pole,” Armstrong said.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was withheld pending notification of relatives.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
