A 24-year-old man was arrested Thursday night on attempted-murder and related charges in connection with a domestic-violence shooting that occurred in the early morning hours in Santa Barbara.
Shortly after midnight, Santa Barbara Police dispatchers received an emergency call about a shooting that had just happened at a home on the 1100 block of Hutash Street, according to Sgt. Bryan Kerr.
“Upon arrival, officers learned the suspect had fled the area, and fortunately, no one was injured in the shooting,” Kerr said.
The suspect was identified as Danyel Raymond Avalos of Santa Barbara, who was known to the intended victims, Kerr said.
He added that investigators learned that Avalos also was wanted by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office in connection with a separate domestic violence incident in which the victim sustained serious injuries.
Both agencies began searching for Avalos, and at about 6:35 p.m., he was located by a Santa Barbara officer inside a vehicle on the first block of East Carrillo Street.
A high-risk apprehension was initiated, which Kerr said became “dynamic” when Avalos began reaching for his waistband.
“Detectives were able to grab hold of Avalos, control him and safely take him into custody,” Kerr said. “They later discovered that Avalos had a loaded handgun with an extended magazine in his waistband.”
Avalos was booked into the Santa Barbara County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and several other serious felonies, Kerr said.
