Marciana Claire Hoffmeier Drury passed away peacefully at home on March 14, 2020, and went to her eternal rest. Marciana was born on Feb. 26, 1934, to John Joseph Hoffmeier and Julia Josephine Harrington Hoffmeier in Kansas City, MO.
Marciana was the great-granddaughter of Cornelius O’Learey, a native of Ireland, who because a U.S. citizen in 1860. Her grandfather was the president of the Victor Motor Car Company in St. Louis, MO.
As a young child, she moved with her parents from St. Louis to San Francisco, where her father was a manager with the Hilton Hotel chain.
Marciana became a resident of Santa Barbara in 1958 and worked as a bookkeeper at AA Plywood, Inc. In the mid-1970s she began selling real estate at Presidio Realty, obtained her real estate broker’s license, and began investing in rental income properties.
She married Dr. Bernard J. Drury in 1976, and became active with him in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, as well as the Women’s Auxiliary of Sansum Clinic Foundation.
In 1989, as a board member of CALM, Marciana was instrumental in the acquisition of the Victoria Hall Theater Building that housed CALM (Child Abuse Listening and Mediation), RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program), and The Unity Shoppe.
Marciana and Bernard gave generously to Catholic Charities of Santa Barbara, where she also assisted low-income clients with housing needs. She was a member of St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and faithfully remembered the Poor Clare Nuns every Christmas with red wine and specialty cheeses from Nona’s Italian Deli.
An avid murder mystery fan, Marciana’s favorite authors included Agatha Christie and Sue Grafton. She was a doting grandmother and a talented seamstress who loved her many dogs (even when they chased rabbits out of her back yard).
She is survived by her husband Dr. Bernard John Drury and her children Laura Hout and Dr. Daniel Levy, Barbara Hout, Teresa Jamison, Dr. Bernard James and Athena Drury, Kathryn and David Anderson, Linda and Daniel Carrozzi, and Gail Drury. She leaves behind 17 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her first husband, Richard Alan Hout (1975); Maureen Drury Henry (1983); and her brothers Joseph Jude Hoffmeier (2002) and Frankie, who died as a toddler in the 1930s.
A funeral mass was held at St. Raphael’s Catholic Church and Marciana was laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery in Santa Barbara. Her family wishes to thank the compassionate and caring team at Hospice of Santa Barbara.
