Marilyn McLychok of Santa Barbara passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, 2026 at age 83. Marilyn was born in 1942, in Great Bend, Kansas, to Theron and Edna Gregory.
She attended the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette, during which time she met the love of her life, John, who was completing his obstetrics residency in New Orleans.
They married and moved to Santa Barbara, where they built a vibrant happy life and raised their four children. Marilyn found great joy in being a “Grandma”/“Baba” to her eight grandchildren – four girls and four boys.
Marilyn and John were married for 58 years until his passing in 2008.
A woman of immense creativity, intellect and warmth, Marilyn had an accepting heart and was a great listener.
She loved developing new recipes, baking, playing competitive bridge, and spending time with her amazing friends.
She was a master of fiber arts — knitting, crocheting and needlepoint — eventually taking home First Prize for Needlepoint at the Santa Barbara County Fair in 2011.
Marilyn was known for her grace, kind heart, and commitment to service. She dedicated more than 20 years to local charities, including serving as president of the Assistance League of Santa Barbara in the year 2000.
She was preceded in death by her husband John Francis, and her daughter Mary Catherine Carter. She is survived by her sons Greg (Kathleen), Michael (Lani), and Mark (Jeanine); and her eight cherished grandchildren Claire, Emma, Sean, Max, Foster, Ian, Mia and Lily.
She will live on in the hearts of her family and friends forever.
A private family gathering will be held in Santa Barbara in her honor.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Community Friends of Santa Barbara (formerly Assistance League of Santa Barbara) at https://www.paypal.com/us/fundraiser/charity/2231991.
