As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, the Marjorie Luke Theatre will present the Santa Barbara premiere of “The Doctrine of Recovery,” 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 15. The screening is part of the theater’s Green Film Series, which highlights environmental issues affecting California, particularly the Central Coast.
The film examines the impact of the “Doctrine of Discovery,” a 1493 papal decree that justified the dispossession of Native lands in North America.
Through the voices of four Indigenous women — Casey Camp-Horinek (“Reservation Dogs”), Crystle Lightning (“Trickster,” “Yellowstone”), Juliet Langley Hayes (“Say Her Name”), and Belinda Bull Shoe — the film calls for a new “Doctrine of Recovery.”
The concept promotes restoring social and environmental justice, reviving the sacred feminine, and ensuring the survival of all species in harmony with the Earth.
“Doctrine of Discovery” has received widespread recognition, winning the Indigenous Futures Award at the 2023 Social Justice Film Festival, and the Feature Documentary Award at the 2023 Dreamspeakers’ International Film Festival.
It has also been showcased at such prominent festivals as the Red Nation International Film Festival, Imaginative Film Festival, and Docs Without Borders.
The event will begin with a Native American prayer, followed by the 75-minute film.
There will be a discussion afterward, headlined by Camp-Horinek, Ponca elder and actor, who will offer her insights on the film’s themes and the broader implications of reclaiming Indigenous rights and addressing historical injustices.
