Mary Connie Zazueta, passed away peacefully on Sept. 18, 2026, her 83rd birthday, embraced with the love of family and friends.

Mary was born on Sept. 18, 1943 in Los Angeles, California. Shortly after her birth, her family moved to Santa Maria, and in 1955 they made Santa Barbara their home.

Mary was one of nine children — seven daughters and two sons — born to Philip Elesondo Zazueta and Bernice Serna Zazueta, who raised their family with love and laughter.

The nickname “Cookie” was given to Mary by her father when she was a child, and it stayed with her throughout her life.

To those who knew and loved her, Cookie was a beautiful spirit with a feisty soul. She was fiercely independent, and full of personality.

Mary was a devoted single mother who worked hard to provide a good life for her two sons.

Mary began her waitressing career at 19 with Montecito Country Club, later moving to La Cumbre Country Club, until her retirement.

She took great pride in her work and was known for her genuine personality, and exceptional waitressing skills.

Mary was always happy to share her knowledge and experience in the hospitality industry, offering guidance and creating opportunities for many family and friends throughout her career.

Mary appreciated the comfort and reliability of a beautiful car and took pride in providing herself with one throughout her life. She also had a love for fashion, always taking pleasure in putting together stylish outfits and looking her best.

From the time she was a young girl, Mary loved to sing and dance. She was a baton majorette with the Santa Barbara High School marching band, before welcoming her first son.

In the early 1960s, Mary danced on the KEYT televised show “Pacific Bandstand,” a reflection of the lively, fun-loving spirit she carried throughout her life.

Her brother Arthur recalls how exciting it was to see her dance on television. She had a natural sense of rhythm and never needed much encouragement to sing or dance.

Mary had a passion for cooking and was known for her delicious salsa, a family favorite that will be missed.

Some of the family’s most cherished memories came from gatherings Mary brought to life, including the first Zazueta Family reunion in 1980 and her unforgettable 50th and 60th birthday celebrations.

Mary had a natural gift for planning a party, effortlessly creating joyful occasions and lasting memories.

Mary loved being outdoors and near the water. Whether spending time on the ocean, relaxing at the lake, camping, or taking her boys on a road trip to visit family or set off for a day at Magic Mountain, she was excited about getting out and enjoying life.

She was especially proud of her four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her brother Arthur Zazueta; sons, Michael Zazueta (Cathy) and Richard Zazueta.

Mary embraced life with passion, independence and laughter. She will be greatly missed by family and friends who loved her.
